Gu Huaisan, courtsey name Qiu Bi,Born in Jiangning, now Nanjing,is a prestigious poet and historian in late period of Han learning of Qian-Jia School. He inherited Qian Daxin and Yao Nai's thoughts. He led a life full of setbacks. He lost his father as a newborn. He lived a lonely and poor life as a young man.He didn't realize his ambition in his middle age,and in his late age became homeless and ended up dying in a foreign place. All his offspring of the next 3 generations died within a time span of30 years.Gu made lots of friends, mostly writers in Jiangsu district. He organized"Tai-cen Society",a poet community that gathered Yang Furen,Wang Zhang,Che Chiqian,Zhou Jiefu and etc.Zhang Luo and Gu were called 2 wise men in White Gate. His other friends include Lu Yitong,Yu Yongji,Wang Qinlin,Liao Yin,Qin Yaoceng,Zhou Baoying,Yan Tingzhong,Gan xu and etc.His students include Zhao Xu,Gong Tan,Bao Guisheng,Han Yin and etc.Gu was a prolific author, and his works on poetry,Fu and history are most well-known.Of all his works, only a small part got published while he was alive. The rest, due to the presence of his offspring, remain unpublished, scattered around, lost, even the objects for plagiarism.Under the influence if textual research in Qing Dynasty, there arises upsurge to supplement Zhi in historical records. As there is no book catalogues in Hou Han Shu by Fan Ye and Xu Han Shu by Sima Biao, different versions of supplemented Zhi for the two books emerged.Among them now five still exist. The authors are Qian Dazhao,Gu Huaisan,Hou Kang,Yao Zhenzong and Zeng Pu.Gu Huaisan's Supplemented Hou Han Shu Yi Wen Zhi is completed during Daoguang Period. It involves 4-branch categorization and classifies all books into 30 types. There are 510 titles in the catalogue includes 1047 titles,3155 volumes,1181 passages,108 chapters,1 music score book.Gu has done complete and explicit textual research in his Zhi with the support of abundant material.Jiang Guobang said there were four merits of his Zhi.At the same time,Gu's Zhi has its own defects such as poor acceptance of books, improper collection and improper collection. The thesis also discusses in detail the relation between Gu's version and Song Zujun's version of Supplemented Wu Dai Shi Yi Wen Zhi.High levels of similarities can be found in these two versions, each one with different author and no acknowledgement of reference or adoption by Song, since his version appeared later than Gu's.This is rarely seen with the rigorous scholarship in Qing Dynasty.Text collation shows plain evidence of Song's plagiarism from Gu's version of Zhi.However, apart from omission and mistakes that took place during his plagiarism,Song also corrected mistakes made by Gu and in the final part Song supplemented Gu's Zhi.By taking into consideration Song's life experience and his circle of friends, this thesis tries to analyse possible ways of Song to get access to Gu's manuscripts. Its endeavor on the one hand is to attribute credits to the right people, and on the other hand to sum up the merits of the 2 versions respectively.Though the 2 Zhi by Gu are both published posthumously, and seem yet to be finished, they still enjoy certain status and exert their influences in the development of Qing Dynasty's Zhi research.Gu's bibliographical thoughts and achievements cannot be neglected. He advocates the 4-branch categorization to classify books according to their content. He collected books in wide range and wrote introductory notes for them.He was prudent when compile the collection, and he put emphasis on explore the origin and circulation of books.Gu's 2 Zhi provide reference to supplement and research the Shizhi Catalogue, and also they provide significant resources of intellectual history.
