A Study On The Chinese Version Of Moment In Peking From The Perspective Of Narratology

Moment in Peking is an English novel written by our famous Chinese author Lin Yutang.At that time,China was experiencing the Anti-Japanese War.Therefore,the aims of the novel are to represent the panorama of the then society and boast the broadness and profoundness of Chinese culture to Western readers.It has won great popularity in the West since its publication,notably enabling Lin nominated to be the candidate of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1975.Among its Chinese translation versions,Yu Fei’s version is of great research value to scholars even if it is not the most popular one.Being an important literary theory,Narratology,emerged from the 1960s,has shown its sound guiding role and explanatory effect on literary translation especially the translation of fiction.By comparing the original text and its Chinese translation in terms of the narrator,the implied author,narrative point of view and speech presentation,the thesis is to decide whether the translator has successfully transferred the thematic and aesthetic meaning.Obviously,the translator has a good knowledge of the omniscient point of view in order to convey the narrative intention and preserve the linguistic features of characters authentically and vividly.What’s more,when confronted with the difference of language conventions between the source language and the target language,the translator has perfectly made some adaptations to fully reproduce the thematic and aesthetic meaning of the original narrative discourse.
