Realism is the central theme on Anglo-Saxon philosophy in the 20th century.Beyond the effect of some analytical philosophers,Hilary Putnam conceived his theory named scientific realism. However, some debates between him and some other famous philosophers changed his mind. Then,Putnam focused on the critique of the metaphysical realism and converted into internal realism. When he realized the flaws of his theory,he developed the common-sense realism to revise his fails.Although the idea of Hilary Putnam which converted twice is complicated,we can still find something same in his theories. That is his critique of metaphysical realism, whenever he defended internal realism or natural realism. Therefore, this article will discuss it under the condition that we all know the trait of metaphysical realism and Hilary Putnam's internal realism and the common-sense realism.Especially,we will pay attention to the reasons why Hilary Putnam doubted the metaphysical realism and the answers Hilary Putnam gave in his theory. There are two views in which we can analyze the reasons that Putnam doubted the metaphysical realism. From the view of ontology,Hilary Putnam rejected that reality can be reduced or exist without context. From the view of epistemology,he criticized the theory of truth and the theory of reference which matched with metaphysical realism.Besides,Hilary Putnam refuted that the interface between subjectivity and objectivity exists. After Putnam criticized the metaphysical realism,he conceive his own theory called internal realism. In this theory,he raised the concept relativity.About epistemology,he explained his view of truth and reference. But the ingredient of metaphysics and the inclination towards relativity are both included in internal realism. And it led to his failure. While knowing this,Hilary Putnam adjusted his view and turned to the common-sense realism which is also named the natural realism.Beyond my consideration and research about the debates between metaphysical realism and Hilary Putnam's view,I try to give some thoughts about this conflict.Firstly, the concept of 'common sense' is obscure and I give my comprehension about this concept.Secondly, metaphysical realism is charming and we still have many reasons to believe it.Thirdly,it's a simple way to eliminate the interface between subjectivity and objectivity. But the relationship between these two are so complex. Finally,we should consider the debates in long-term view.
