A Research Into Prefabricated Chunks In College English Reading Teaching For Art Majors

Scholars at home and abroad have carried out numerous researches on the application of prefabricated chunks in foreign language teaching(FLT),and generally recognize the importance of prefabricated chunks in FLT.At present,English reading teaching in art majors is facing many difficulties for art majors students have weak English foundation,low learning motivation and poor reading strategies.Therefore,it is urgent for teachers to explore a new teaching model for college art majors so as to improve their reading competence.Therefore,on the basis of effect of memory on chunks theory,capacity theory and dual-mode system,this study designs prefabricated chunks reading teaching model and applies it to art majors students' English reading class in order to solve the following three research questions:(1)How does the author create the prefabricated chunks teaching model and apply it to the reading teaching for college art majors?(2)What effect does prefabricated chunks teaching model have on college art majors' English reading performance?(3)What effect does the prefabricated chunks teaching model have on college art majors' English reading teaching?In this study,83 art freshmen from two art majors classes in Shenyang Normal University were randomly assigned as experimental group(EG)and control group(CG).The pretest data show that the English reading level of the two classes is at the same level.The students in EG receive the prefabricated chunks reading teaching model and the students in CG receive the traditional reading teaching model.The research tools include: English reading test,questionnaire,interview and SPSS16.0.According to the analysis of the data,the questionnaire and the interview,the conclusions are drawn as follow:(1)The application of prefabricated chunks teaching model in English reading teaching can improve the reading ability of the art majors' students.(2)Most students hold a positive attitude towards prefabricated chunk reading teaching model.They approve that the application of prefabricated chunks in the teaching process of reading,and they can consciously incorporate prefabricated chunks learning and accumulation into ordinary learning.(3)The prefabricated chunks teaching model changes the teaching philosophy and optimizes the teaching design which provides new inspiration for the teaching of college art majors' English reading.This research gives the following inspirations to the college English reading teaching of art majors:(1)Teachers should cultivate students' ability to discover and induce chunks from the corpus,and enhance their sensitivity to prefabricated chunks.(2)Teachers should guide students to regard prefabricated chunks as the basic units of reading so as to have a better understanding of the logical relationship of texts.However,there are still some shortcomings of this study to be further developed and perfected.
