Bai Jiao was a gifted scholar from Shanghai. He had a fame of ignoring the rules of Confucianism. His close friends were mostly people with noble swordsman’s character.Bai Jiao was a man of character who neglected the worldly pursuit of fame and wealth, and led a life of poverty, often "troubling about the lack of black ink and white rice”.Since he was a child,he had a passion for calligraphy and painting. He first studied Tang calligraphers’ style, and then studied the Jin calligraphy, until he became a master. He had his own unique examination and analysis of the tablet calligraphy that reached its peak in the late Qing dynasty and the Republic of China era.Not following the popular trend, and with his profound understanding of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi’s calligraphy,he developed his own unique style following the spirit and charm of Jin dynasty. Therefore, through the discussion of Baijiao’s life story, circle of friends, his thoughts and practice, this paper explores the relation between Bai Jiao’s temperament and his calligraphy style of Jin spirit. This paper emphasizes Bai Jiao’s calligraphy philosophy and his perception and manifestation of the spirit of Wei and Jin era through his calligraphy.
