A Research Report On C-E Translation Of Series Books Of Memory Of The Old Home In Sketches (Pieces) From The Perspective Of Reception Theory

This project signed with Academy Press by my supervisor is about the C-E translation of series books of Memory of the Old Home in Sketches.With sketches and wordings,the books record the cultural relics of famous towns,villages,and ancient building complex around the country,some of which have already vanished or disappeared,as well as etiquettes and customs,life-style or scenes of life with unique characteristics of various ethnic groups in different places.With hundred plus pieces of drawings in each book,this series books have been listed into the project bank of Reform and Development Project Concerning Press and Publication.The translation of cultural heritage texts can boost people’s pride in their own history and culture,and promote mutual understanding and recognition among different countries.In this thesis,an analytical study of series books(pieces): Sketch of the Ancient Capital-Hangzhou,part of Culture in North of Tianshan Mountains,part of Relics Along the Silk Road will be represented.Under the principle of reception theory,this translation is conducted from the perspective of readers’ role and position,horizon of expectation,readers’ reception and cultural exchange.Translating methods of omission,transliteration,paraphrase,rephrasing and sound-meaning combination translation are employed to make the characteristic of texts and language style explicit to readers.In addition,the choice of vocabulary,syntax and discourse will be considered to show the differences in culture,language and aesthetics.Hence,the unique information and image of the original text would be retained and conveyed in target language on the one hand,and readers’ receptive ability and expectations will be took into consideration on the other hand,so as to reach the fusion of horizons and textual value in information,culture and aesthetics.Under the principle of reception theory,it is found with receptivity and the role of readers in the translation of Memory of the Old Home in Sketches,the target language can further promote reader’s acceptance,recognition and resonance with original texts.This is not only helpful for readers to improve literary cultivation,but also conducive to the cross-cultural transmission and cultural appreciation.It is hoped that this translation of the Series Books of Memory of the Old Home in Sketches will have a positive effect on the exploration of strategies in the study of Chinese cultural heritage.
