A Report On Translation Of A Rose For Emily And That Evening Sun

This translation project is the translation of William Faulkner’s two classic short stories:A Rose for Emily and That Evening Sun.They are important parts of Faulkner’s " Yoknapatapha series".This report is based on Newmlark’s two translation theories—communicative translation and semantic translation,discussing the practical application of these two translation theories in literary texts.This literary works selected by the author are mostly in the form of dialogue and long difficult sentences,which is a big challenge for the translator to understand the historical and cultural background of the works and translation ability of sentence syntax.This report focuses on the following translation techniques:firstly,at the lexical and phrasal level,we can use the interpretation to add footnotes or parenthesis to explain words for readers’ better understanding of specialized terms.To deal with words with denotative meanings,the translator should take context into account,sometimes the translation method of adaption can make the suitable meaning.In addition,Chinese idioms can be applied flexibly,the translation of adjective can be explaining by idioms.Secondly,at the sentence level,there’s no need to rigidly adhere to the sentence structure of the original text.We can use anastrophy in pre-attribute translation to rearrange the sentence,and use conversion to translate passive construction.Long sentence can be divided into short ones by using splitting.Thirdly,at the sentence group level,dialogue translation should present the character’s personalities and feelings by imitating the tone.Portrait description translation should follow a reasonable order in describing macroscopic features.Mental description translation should employ the writing style similar to the original text to express the writer’s thoughts.To achieve this goal,the translator should understand the cultural background,the writer’s intention and characters’personalities.Through this practice of translation,the author summarizes how to use the Newmark’s two translation theories in the translation of literary texts.But in the process of translation,we should use appropriate translation strategies in the specific situation.At the same time,the author also hopes we have a better understanding of the translation theoretical knowledge through this translation practice,and finish more translation of different texts,and hope that this report can help people in need.
