A Report On The Translation Of "Logic And Language In Early Chinese Philosophy"

The following report is attempted to find fit translation strategies for the philosophical paper “Logic and Language in Early Chinese Philosophy” rendered into Chinese in this project,with the type and characteristics of its source text delimited and analyzed,under the guidance of the translation theory of Peter Newmark.The text is written by Willman Marshall and published in the network Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.Expounding the features of logic and language in early Chinese philosophy,the source text has much to say for the Englishing of the Chinese thought,especially in pinpointing the way of thinking of the latter,and its “back translation” can reveal and help to reflect on the issues concerned in the cultural communication between China and the West in philosophizing.As a case study of the rendition of philosophical issues,the report is to get into typological features of the original text and find ways to translate it effectively.The strictly coherent structure and the semantic implication of the text ask for a corresponding rendition.Newmark's theory of communicative and semantic translation thus can shed light on the needs in translating the logical terms and long sentences.
