A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Documents Of The Thirty-ninth Meeting Of The Parties To The Montreal Protocol

The United Nations Environment Programme held the thirty-ninth meeting of Open-ended Working Group of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in Bangkok,Thailand in July,2017.The author had the opportunity to translate some of the meeting documents from English to Chinese under the guidance of Chen Xiaoguang,a senior translator of China Translation Corporation during this period.The source text is a UN meeting document which is accurate,consistent and formal.Therefore the theories of semantic translation and communicative translation are applied to the translation practice,which forms the basis of this translation report.In this report,firstly,the translation task is described and the translation process including the preparation,draft translation and revision is reviewed.Secondly,the linguistic features of the source text are analyzed to determine the proper translation approach.Thirdly,theories of semantic translation and communicative translation are briefly introduced and their applicability to this practice is discussed.Finally,it is concluded through a case study,from the lexical and syntactical aspects,that the combination of semantic translation and communicative translation is of benefit to the translation of the documents of this kind.
