A Report On Translation Of The Wars:A Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,this report excerpts the 5th part of the novel The Wars by Canadian writer Timothy Findley as the source text.The protagonist of the novel is Robert Ross.After the accidental death of his handicapped sister,Robert Ross is consumed by deeply guilt thus enlists in the Canadian Field Artillery in 1915 in an attempt to escape his grief.The Wars mainly introduces the legendary story of protagonist Robert Ross by using a typical Southern Ontario Gothic style.This report will mainly discuss translation difficulties from the 5th part of the novel,namely,special words and expressions,descriptive sentences and dialogues between different characters.On the basis of functional equivalence theory,this report analyzes the translation difficulties by using different translation methods and skills.The translator uses amplification and notation to analyze special words and expressions,including proper nouns of name and place,local songs with Canadian culture and so on.There are so many descriptive sentences about nature,war scenes,and psychological description of some characters.The translator adopts conversion and repetition to deal with problems in descriptive sentences.The translator also uses spoken language and conflicts between characters to analyze dialogues between different characters.This report aims to convey the meaning of source text and reproduces characters' features and writing style of the source text thus to achieve good quality of the translation.
