This paper is a practical report based on the biography Basil Street Blues: A Family Story. The author of the book is Michael Holroyd.Holroyd was born in London and had been educated at Eaton College. He published his first book in 1964,the biography of Hugh Jens Miller.Michael Holroyd is one of the most famous biographers in England, and the Basil Street Blues is his first memoir. The book is not only a family memoir but also an obscure journey of self-discovery,it is both astonishing and moving.Due to the limit of word number, this practice report only selected the first three sections of the book and studied the problems and strategies encountered in translation practice so as to write the translation practice report.Basil Street Blues is a biography.Apart from recording, the author added his own feelings, imagination and inference.Authenticity is the most basic requirement of biography. The purpose is to make the reader truly understand the author's experience and inner feelings so as to understand the real way of westerners' life.According to the characteristics of biography, the translator chooses the functional equivalence theory to guide translation which does not emphasize the correspondence but the equivalence between the two languages. The acceptor can get roughly the same reaction when reading the works. The specific application is as follows: in terms of vocabulary, the translator replaces the difficult vocabulary containing the extended meaning into the simple one;in terms of long and difficult sentence, the translator converts the sequence of sentences and make adjustments in accordance with the habits of readers. After the practice, the translator realizes her shortcomings in translation, thus making a conclusion from the importance of translation theory, the quality of the translator and direction of improvements at the end.
