In the late 1970 s,the Chinese society was rapidly transformed and opened to the outside world,and “modernization” was the general appeal for social development.At the same time,Western civilization and China's traditional culture were in fierce collision,and the scale was more ambitious than during the “may fourth” movement.Following the new requirements of the development of the times,the society has created a series of contradictory issues that need to be resolved,such as “China” and “Western”,“tradition” and “modern”,“past” and “future”,and so on.As a mirror of social history,literature has gathered the true conditions of a certain era.Then,the literature of the new era is a complex and realistic reflection of this period of social transformation,and the root-seeking literature is an insurmountable peak in the 1980 s.In the context of d iscourse such as “modernization” “new enlightenment” “cultural warmth” and “subjectivity”,the “cultural root-seeking” trend of thought came into being and became more heated.Along with this,literary and artistic creation gradually developed toward the “root-seeking” trend,and the trend of root-seeking novels emerged in the fiction world.That was the birth spawned by many social contradictions.The history of literature shows that educated youth writers are the main force among the root-seeking writers.So,what kind of dynamic relationship exists between the educated youth writers and the root-seeking novels creation? What are the creation limitations? These issues have historical value and realistic significance to contemporary literary creation.This article selects the urban educated youth in the narrow concept,takes the text of the root-seeking novels as the research objected,and based on the core point of the writers' subject's educated youth identity.In addition,following the principle of interaction between subject and object,this article uses textual close reading to find the educated youth writers' desire for self-identity and cultural identity,predicament of identity,and exploration of aesthetic.Then,we can explain the internal relationship between these phenomena.On the diachronic level,compared with the educated youth writers of scar novels and introspective novels,this paper points out that the educated youth writers of root-seeking novels have consciousness of transcendence.In addition,this article also discusses the guiding significance of the root-seeking novels which wrote by the educated youth writers for the fiction creation of new realism and vanguard,as well as the practical inspiration humanistic intellectuals' literary creation in the context of postmodern theory.This article is divided into five chapters:Firstly,the introduction defines the root-seeking novels,clarifies the identity of the root-seeking novelists,and explain the concepts of identity,identity o f educated youth,identity of educated youth writers,and so on.Secondly,it states the research status and innovation of this thesis.Finally,it introduces the research methods and the significance in the social and literary respects.The first chapter is based on the two dimensions which are the external situation of the society and the intrinsic motivation of educated youth,inspects and analyzes the literary relationship between root-seeking novels and educated youth,and points out the spiritual aims of the creation of educated youth's root-seeking novels.Since the 1980 s,the relatively loose state of the political economy and the discussion on issues such as “cultural craze” and “subjectivity” have allowed culture and literature to temporarily become the main body of society.Moreover,after the opening of the country,the strong influx of western civilization has led to the localization of Chinese culture and literature,and Marques won the noble prize of literature also promotes the development of “cultural root-seeking” and “literary root-seeking”.In essence,in the tide of social modernization,“root-seeking” can only be the reconstruction of the traditional spirit of national survival under the modern perspective,and this traditional spirit has become the “root” needed for literary creation.It is worth noting that the “look for” social situation is closely related to educated youth writers' spiritual trends.As a generation of intellectuals who have experienced changes in history,the rapidly changes of the era made the educated youth desperate for self-identity.On the one hand,the elite stand of cultural enlightenment is in line with the cultural modernity of modern society,and they are able to reshape their self-image.On the other hand,the folk cultural experience and the unique perception of regional culture in the mountainous and rural areas indicate that they could carry out ethic cultural identity and defend Western civilization.Based on this,the literary construction function and its special way of creating culture naturally become the best choice for the educated youth writers.The second chapter focuses on the value concept of the educated youth writers of the root-seeking novels,and expounds their appeal of cultural identity ident ification and prominent identification difficulties which displayed in the text.The educated youth writers have a nostalgia and hope for the folk culture because of the incompleteness of traditional cultural background and the unique geographical culture recognition.However,the intrinsic pursuit of social modernity led them to alert to the ignorance and feudal nature in the rural culture.so,the cultural identity of educated youth writers of root-seeking novels could not help but in a conflict situation.The third chapter is based on the self-consciousness of the educated youth writers of the root-seeking novels,and analyzes their social identity ambition and implied identification predicament in the text.The existence of villages that cannot go back and cities that does not get into stimulates the educated youth to bring out a strong self-identity appeal.However,in the process of individual identity,they are deeply influenced by enlightenment rationality and historical traumatic memories.Therefore,different levels of self-identity,self-fiction,and self-doubt led them to fall into the embarrassing situation of self-lost.The fourth chapter is closely linked to the emotional attitudes of the educated youth writers of the root-seeking novels,revealing their pursuit of aesthetic modernity represented in the text.Aesthetics have a secular redemption function.It breaks through many dilemmas,such as the same and common sense,and this is the way to get rid of the identity dilemmas after they have fallen into it.Affected by individual differences,the educated youth writers show different pursuits of aesthetic modernity in the face of identity dilemmas and modernity information,thus forming a strange artistic style.This fifth chapter is based on the difference between educated youth identity and non-educated youth identity,analyse the limitation of creation of novels by the educated youth writers due to the incompleteness of childhood experiences in rural areas,the rupture of traditional culture,and the conflict of modernity thoughts.
