The study of the Laozi’s "Xin" theory will be helpful for us to further un derstand the ideological system of Laozi’ theories and provide us with diversifi ed ideas to interpret Laozi’s doctrine.This article mainly revolves around Laozi’s thoughts of the "Wu xin" statu s,what is the "Wu xin" status and how to achieve the "Wu xin" status in an a ttempt to reconstruct the idea of "Xin" in the theories of Laozi.First,beginning with the original structure of the "Xin",the four functions of mind-"knowing","feeling","meaning"and"behaving"are reconsidered.For the reason that the "Xin"of man naturally has a function of understanding and recognizing,there will exi st"knowledge"derived from recognizing and the"desire"derived from this cognitio n.On the one hand,both of them are beneficial functions for the "Xin".On the other hand,they are also the root-cause of human chaos.Therefore,Laozi propose s to use the methods of"not knowing what to know"and"regarding no desire as the desire"to get rid of the "Wu xin".Second,Laozi has consturcted a system of"Wu xin" ideology.The "Wu xin" status is both the grasp of of the true nature of hu man beings and the road to really feel and approach Taoism.However,the knowledg e on "Xin" hinders the feeling of Taoism on the road of being pure and "Wu xin".For this reason,one must abandon the"knowledge"including learned beliefs and value s to fully feel the nature of human mind.Laozi uses the imageries of’Baby","Foolis h Man"and"Sage"to properly show what is the ideal "Wu xin" status in his theory.T hird,this paper discusses how to reach to the "Wu xin" status and the ultimate utility of the "Wu xin".Laozi proposes that "Wu xin" status should be reached by returning to having"nothingness"in mind and kept by staying in"quietness".Only by thoroughly clearing the"stubborn mind"and then raising it with both"no thingness"and"quietness"can we get rid of the "Wu xin".And the effect of being"Wu xin" is naturally manifested in the maintenance of human life.The survival of life can not be separated from two carriers.One is the"body"of the person,a nd the other is the social environment.Therefore,the utility of being "Wu xin"is mainly the maintenance of the body and the maintenance of stability and har mony of the society.The "Wu xin" status of individuals is mainly manifested as advocating"weak",which is the status of vivid life in taoism and not contendin g.The "Wu xin" status of governing is mostly represented by governing with"in actions",which means that the natural rules of the society will stimulate itself v ery well.Laozi’s "Wu xin" theory is a kind of criticism to the chaos caused by the"Xin"moves of human beings.By the dialectics between the "Xin" status and t he "Wu xin"status,Laozi tries to emphasize the importance of maintaining indivi dual natural hearts.The "Wu xin" theory is not only a principle of maintaining life,but also a recognition and real practice of Taoism. |
