The research on the Book of Songs in modern times presents an obvious transformation characteristics,because it lies in the late nineteenth and early twentieth which is a age experiencing radical change.Based on the collection and analysis of those research results on the Book of Songs during this period,this essay points out that the transformation of the research on the Book of Songs is from traditional research to modern research.Generally speaking,it is based on the understanding that the Book of Songs is literature rather than classics,however,the transformation from literature to Confucian Classics doesn't can cover its full meaning.The modern research on the Book of Songs not only brings in some important factors from western but also inherits the best part from traditional research.it is an academic system which is compatible with new and old,and presents some prominent characteristics exclusively possessed by this age.Around this core,this essay mainly do some research with four chapters,exclude the introduction and summary.Chapter 1 analyzes the social and academic background.From the aspect of social background,the analysis goes along the following ways:the deepening of the national crisis,the reform of the education system,the rapid development of the communication industry and the fierce exchange of ideas between new and old,China and the West.From the level of academic background,it mainly presents the decline of the traditional research,which are the results of the loss of the practical function,the rigidity of the academic system and the push of the pursuit-of-truth spirit within it.Chapter 2 offers the collection and analysis of the research results of the Book of Songs from 1840 to 1919 and points out that it shows the following features:the continuing influence of Qian-Jia scholar,the meteoric rise of the new text Confucianism and the incubation of the modern learning.This chapter also thinks that the basic condition of this period is the fading of the traditional research.Although it has made some efforts to try to adapt the new demand,it eventually fails to get rid of the traditional academic system.At the same time,when the traditional research is declining,there are some works studying the Book of Songs from the angle of literature which denotes the dawning of the modern academic.Chapter 3 offers the collection and analysis of the works on the Book of Songs from 1920 to 1949 and proposed that the modern research on the Book of Songs experiences a process from prematuration to maturation.During the period,it mainly experiences the following stages:the criticism to the Confucian classic,the recognition to the Book of Songs' literature traits,the discussion of some basic problems and the reference from tradition and west.Besides,this chapter also introduces some scholars' contribution to the Book of Songs,such as Hu Shi,Gu Jiegang,and Wen Yiduo.Chapter 4 concludes some characteristics during the transformation period.It mainly includes five aspects.Firstly,it is deeply effected by social thought and trend.Secondly,some scientific methods,such as induction and comparison,are widely used.Thirdly,the monographic study becomes a popular trend.Fourthly,the realistic spirit penetrates its whole research.Fifthly,there is a freely-discuss academic atmosphere.
