The translation project is an E-C translation of The Spectator Bird, which is a subproject entrusted by Shanghai 99 Readers' Culture Co.,Ltd.Under the lead of Professor Bo Zhenjie, the author's supervisor, she undertakes the translation of the book from Chapter One to Chapter Three and finishes the report writing based on the translation. The report is divided into five chapters:the first chapter briefly summarizes the project information, including its background, requirements, significance, book information and the structure of the report. The second chapter introduces the preparation for the translation practice, including translation reference tools and references on novel translation and western literature. The third chapter expounds on the translation process including source text understanding, target text constructing and target text polishing. The fourth chapter is the analysis and demonstration of the allusion translation from the perspective of the relevance translation theory. The last chapter concludes major findings, limitations and suggestions of the report. To enhance the appeal of the novel,Wallace Stegner employs a lot of allusions. The rich cultural meaning of these allusions brings great challenge to the author in her translation process. Therefore, the author explores methods for translating English allusions into Chinese under the guidance of the relevance translation theory. The report finds that according to the similarity of the cognition between the source reader and the target reader, allusions can be translated with two strategies:direct translation and indirect translation. The specific methods of indirect translation include:literal translation plus annotation, amplification, amplification plus annotation, substituting and restituting. At the same time,as the requirements of the project are to be faithful to the content and the style of the source text while guaranteeing fluent expression and reading effects, the report suggests that direct translation and annotation can better convey the original style and meet target readers' expectation. It is sincerely hoped that the report can provide reference for the translation of allusions.
