A Research On Non-English Majors' Obstacles In Oral English And The Corresponding Strategies

With the rapid development of the world economy,the requirements for new types of English talents are becoming higher and higher,and the cultivation of college students'English communication skills is particularly important.English education in China is usually exam-oriented.English teachers usually focus on language.knowledge but they often neglect the cultivation of students' oral ability.Therefore,even after many years of study,most Chinese college students make little progress in their spoken English.Because of the influence of the traditional exam-oriented education,the cultivation of college students' oral English ability has been neglected.Some universities even have no oral English course.Under the circumstance,how to cultivate and improve students' oral English ability so as to make them meet the need of society has become an urgent problem.In this paper,on the basis of previous studies,the following research has been carried out on non-English majors of Fujian Normal University.First,observations.The author observed in their English class to learn about their oral English performance.Second,questionnaires and interviews.The author sent out questionnaires to the students and their teachers and had some interviews with them.The results of the research are as follows.Non-English majors oral obstacles include language barriers and non-language barriers.Language barriers include insufficient vocabulary,nonstandard pronunciation or intonation,and weak grammar,while non-language barriers include psychological barriers,environmental impact,etc.Causes of the obstacles include subjective factors and objective factors.The subjective factors include the learners' psychological factors,learning interest,learning motivation and learning autonomy while the objective factors consist in lack of necessary language learning environment,oral English classes and tests,enough attention by schools and parents.This study puts forward some corresponding countermeasures on how to improve non-English majors' oral English ability from the aspect of education sectors,teachers and students.
