Interpreting Strategies Of Government Press Conference From The Perspective Of Interpretive Theory

During the "Two Sessions" in March every year,the Chinese Premier meets with the Chinese and foreign media to answer their questions concerning hot spot issues at home and abroad.This occasion is also a significant platform for the world to know about the political,economic and diplomatic policies in China.Meanwhile,the interpreters serve as the bridge of communication and their interpreting performance reflects China's political stand and global image.Considering the tight time and the great pressure of the government press conference interpreting,it is necessary to select appropriate strategies to ensure that interpreters accurately convey the source language information.The interpretive theory suggests that as a communicative activity,the emphasis of interpreting should be sense equivalences rather than word correspondences.Due to the differences in Chinese and English language structures and cultural backgrounds,interpreters should not be confined to the linguistic forms of the original language.Instead,they should pay more attention to the sense in the discourse,which is in line with the interpretive theory's key view of"deverbalization".Therefore,the interpretive theory plays an important role in choosing the interpreting strategies of government press conferences.Guided by the interpretive theory,this thesis analyzes the difficulties and standards in interpreting government press conferences and further proposes the interpreting strategies concerning literal interpreting,amplification,omission,negation interpreting,sentence restructuring and free interpreting through discourse analysis of Premier Li Keqiang's Press Conference in 2018.Overall,the thesis aims to provide reference for interpreters and improve their performance for similar practices in the future.
