English extensive reading aims to help students accumulate linguistic knowledge,enhance sense of English and improve discourse analysis skills through a large number of readings.However,most Chinese learners have a weak foundation in English reading and lack the corresponding reading strategies,which lead to poor English reading comprehension performance.As one of the learning strategies,meta-cognitive reading strategies have attracted the attention of educators and teachers gradually because of the unique effects on the teaching of extensive reading.The American educator Dewey expressed relevant statements about the development of meta-cognition in his book How We Think.He clearly pointed out and explained the importance of developing positive monitoring and critical evaluation capabilities.The current domestic and foreign studies on meta-cognitive strategies in English extensive reading have yielded promising results.Due to the rapid development of mobile Internet and smart education,personalized adaptive learning has become a new paradigm of education technology based on big data.Therefore,meta-cognitive strategies cannot only stay in traditional classroom teaching but should advance with the times.The author reviewed a large amount of literature and found that few researchers combined meta-cognitive strategies with the development of today's big data and learning analysis techniques.Therefore,according to the Open Learner Model constructed by personalized adaptive learning,the author studies the training effects on meta-cognitive strategies of college English extensive reading.The experimental subjects of this study is non-English majors.The author attempts to study the using effects of meta-cognitive strategies and the acceptance of the Open Learner Model on these groups in English extensive reading.Based on the research status of meta-cognitive strategies and the Open Learner Model,the author combines the practice of college English extensive reading teaching with meta-cognitive strategies training under the Open Learner Model to study the feasibility and effectiveness.The questions concerning the research include:(1)Which reading meta-cognitive strategies are mainly used by students in English extensive reading?(2)Can the meta-cognitive strategies training under the Open Learner Model be able to train the personalized adaptive learning ability of the learners?(3)What is the effect of meta-cognitive strategies training under the Open Learner Model on the academic performance of extensive reading learning?The author obtains the following conclusions through qualitative and quantitative research methods.First of all,according to the questionnaires,the author finds that learners are confused about the use of meta-cognitive strategies before they have systematically studied related knowledge,and the overall use of meta-cognitive strategies is not high.The most frequently used strategy is the selective attention strategy.Combining with students' pre-test scores,the author also finds that students who scored well have a higher frequency of the using of meta-cognitive strategies.This also shows that the use of meta-cognitive strategies is positively correlated with academic performance.Second,the overall acceptance of the Open Learner Model is considerable,which proves that the benefits of this new computer-assisted teaching model are recognized by students.Although students' pre-test scores are strongly related to the overall degree of acceptance of the Open Learner Model,there are no significant difference between the students with good grades and those with poor grades in the sub-contents in the questionnaire about willingness to use the Open Learner Model.Therefore,the author can also infer that the promotion of the Open Learner Model should be taught in accordance with their aptitude.It is counterproductive to promote the use of the Open Learner Model that disrespect the wishes of students which may cause excessive learning pressure to students.What's more,the author finds that although the progress of the post-test scores in the experimental class is significantly greater than that of the control class,it cannot be ignored that there is a significant difference between the post-test results of both the control class and the experimental class as compared with the pre-test results which illustrates that the use of traditional teaching methods for students' progress inacademic performance of English extensive reading also has a significant effect.Therefore,we should not completely reject the traditional teaching model.The author also compares the post-test scores of the control class and the experimental class and finds that there are also significant differences between the two.It can be seen that the innovative teaching model combined with meta-cognitive strategies training and the Open Learner Model on English extensive reading has a greater impact on students' academic performance.So the innovation of teaching model is necessary on English extensive reading teaching.Finally,the author also finds some new conclusions.For example,students at different levels have differences performance in post-test scores,however,their expectations for meta-cognitive strategies training under the Open Learner Model are also high.So this gives researchers greater confidence in carrying out similar teaching models on other fields such as listening,writing and speaking in English teaching in the future.Moreover,from the results of the empirical study,the author finds that the study has both theoretical significance and practical significance.First of all,although the traditional English extensive reading teaching has a certain effect on the improvement of performance for second language learners,the disorder in the use of learning strategies in English extensive reading is also an indisputable fact.What's more,with the arrival of the era of big data,the teaching model combined with the Open Learner Model has been widely used in many disciplines,so the routine teaching model based on the Open Learner Model in English teaching should also keep pace with the times.Second,with the internationalization of learning,the requirements of the learners' English reading are increasing,and the main way of understanding English literature is extensive reading.As a common English language teacher,we have a responsibility to help students improve their ability of English extensive reading,it is not only a requirement for teachers to help their students improving their English proficiency,but also a requirement for students to learn more profession-related English literature and develop international perspectives.Therefore,whether teachers can choose the appropriate teaching model is a key factor for students to improve thelevel of English extensive reading ability.What's more,in the second language acquisition,English reading learning,especially English extensive reading,has always been a boring content for most students.The training of meta-cognitive strategies can improve the accuracy of students' learning strategies and the use of the Open Learner Model can increase students' interest and competitiveness in English extensive learning.Eventually,it turns out that the exploration of meta-cognitive strategies training under the Open Learner Model has produced positive results in English extensive reading teaching.Therefore,the use of the teaching model is worth promoting in language skills in the future.From the proof based on the experiment in the teaching research,we can get the following conclusion.First,it is necessary to introduce meta-cognitive strategies training in the teaching of College English extensive reading.Second,as many teachers neglect the use of online learning software in College English reading textbooks,in the teaching of college English extensive reading,it is necessary for teachers to carry out computer-assisted teaching in combination with the supporting online learning software.Third,teachers should execute teaching innovation based on the actual situation of students and constantly adjust teaching process according to the acceptance of students when using the Open Learner Model for assisting teaching.Although the improvement of college students' English extensive reading performance may not be an overnight event,English teachers have responsibility and also should have confidence in finding more efficient teaching models and making their students to meet the demands of the contemporary society for English reading ability.Meta-cognitive strategies training in English extensive reading under the Open Learner Model is just an exploration based on current college English extensive reading teaching situation,moreover,with the continuous teaching practice and in-depth study of the teaching ideas of English reading,this model also needs continuous innovation to adapt to the latest requirements of college English teaching.
