Since the signing of Treaty of Shimonoseki between the Qing government and Japan in 1895,Taiwan had been in colonization of up to 50 years.Accompanied by the arrival of strict colonial systems, modern school of thoughts flew in and so did the “assimilation” education policies with the aim of better colonial rule.In this period, the Japanese government spared no effort to open public schools and popularize Japanese teaching, leading to an experience of writing in Japanese that most local Taiwanese writers had.Lung Ying-tsung was the one with unique personal style in the literary creation of this period. In his debut novel The Small Town with Papaya Trees, which was awarded the "The Nineth Rewards Novel Award " by Japan Remake Magazine,Lung Ying-tsung formed a character of an alcoholic intellectual who paralyzed himself with alcohol, due to the disillusionment of Japanese Dream,to escape from the chores. After that,Lung Ying-tsung continuously produced plenty of weak, incompetent and coward images of intellectuals.Combining colonial social background during Japanese occupation in Taiwan and the author's own experience, this article intends to discuss and explore the critical and revolt spirit through the images of “alcoholics”.According to the images of “alcoholics” in Lung Ying-tsung's Novels, this article is divided into three parts. The first part categorizes the intellectuals who chose to be alcoholic to escape from reality because of disillusionment of their dreams: realistic alcoholics represented by Chen Yu-san and mental alcoholics represented by Lin Hsing-nan's eldest son.The social origin will then be analyzed. The second part focuses on the intellectuals who had been used to be alcoholic and induced others to get drunk,as well as the ordinary people,in which their dual identity will be analyzed—the “victims” of the colonial system and the “perpetrators” from the feudal patriarchal system and aimed at women's destiny. In the meantime,a roundabout resistance revealed by the females will be interpreted. The third part pays attention to the works in The Imperial Subject Movement.Combining the social background in the wartime, this part analyzes the image transformation of the “alcoholics” as a result of the call by the“south” in Lung Ying-tsung's Novels, and explores the optimism and hopefulness which are different from those of the previous “alcoholics”,presented in Tu Nan-yuan series.
