Chunk studies have been widely applied in language teaching and well represented in linguistics, but the effects of chunk training on interpreting is rarely a study subject.Accuracy, fluency and idiomaticity are three important standards for accessing interpreting quality. As a skill set, interpreting is a demanding job,but chunk application,to some extent, makes it easier. Therefore,it is worthwhile to study the effect of chunk training on interpreting. This paper applies Alison Wray’s chunk theory, the chunk categorization by Nattinger&DeCarrico, and Daniel Gile’s Effort Model to analyze the recordings of two groups of SI majors in interpreting a TED speech.Through analysis, the author finds that, the more lexical chunks are accumulated and the longer chunk training lasts, the more accurate, fluent and idiomatic the interpretation is.Interpreting learners are encouraged to accumulate chunks, especially phrasal constraints,to enhance interpreting;teachers of interpreting instruction are well advised to carry out chunk training.
