The Research Of David Herman’s Cognitive Narratology

David Herman is a professor at the Ohio State University,he has a high academic status and important influence in contemporary narrative community.As one of the most important representatives of cognitive narratology,Herman inherits the classical narratology,and makes it contextualization,and makes the narrative,linguistics and cognitive science combine with each other,make great contributions for the generation and development of cognitive narratology.In the meantime,Herman often communicate with other post-classical narratology genres such as rhetorical narratology,feminist narratology,not only does identify its own uniqueness,also assimilate a lot of heterogeneous thoughts,open up new space for cognitive narratology.In view of Herman’s importance in cognitive narratology,this paper regard Herman as the main research object to explore the general appearance of cognitive narrative.As one of the main genres of classical narratology,cognitive narratology,rhetorical narratology,and feminist narratology,form a situation of tripartite confrontation.Generally speaking,there are two main problems to be discussed in cognitive narratology:First is to construct a cognitive base for the study of narrative structure and narrative interpretation.Second is to explore the cognitive process of reading narrative text,or the interaction between narrative and thinking:Specific to Herman’s cognitive narratology,this paper focuses on some of the more influential arguments in his mind,these arguments also are influential when people refer to cognitive narrative.The first is the discussion of Herman’s three key terms:Sequence,Actant,and Storyworlds.Sequence and Actant also are very important in classical narratology phase,Herman makes it contextualization,and find the corresponding cognitive basis and reasonable cognitive processes for the two terms.The Storyworlds is Herman’s deepest thought and his representative point of view.Storyworlds aren’t the real worlds,also aren’t the pure text world,but these are readers use a series of cues in the text that set by authors to reconstruct worlds in your mind.Compare with story,It has some advantages.Storyworlds is more accord with our general reading situation.It’s worth noting that Herman doesn’t have much to say about the Storyworlds,his focus is on how to construct the world of stories,which is "narrative worldmaking".This problem is the basis of Herman’s cognitive narratology.Secondly,this paper discusses the "quartering" method of Herman’s narrative elements.Since Russian formalism,narrative elements have always been the concern of narratology.In the classical narratology stage,Todorov,Genette,and Chatman discussed it through "dichotomy" and "tripartite "method.In Herman,he combined the analysis of the narrative elements with the reader’s reading and established the"quartering" method.These four elements are "situatedness","event sequencing ","worldmaking/world disruption","what it’s like".These four elements interact with each other to form the important influencing factors of narrative.Thirdly,this paper also discusses a very important interpretation mode of Herman in recent years.Unlike the "the Narrative Communication Model" that has long been popular in the classical narratology phase,Herman has created a unique CAPA interpretation model.The so-called CAPA is the four aspects to be considered in the process of narrative interpretation:context,action,person and ascription.Herman is a determined intentionalist,and he is dissatisfied with the rhetorical narratology that come to terms with the textual centralism.In Herman’s view,the implied author,implied reader and other entities are the author’s intentional setting.In the interpretation of reading,only the two poles of the story--creator and the story interpreter--are enough,and the others can be produced from two poles.World storying and Story worlding is brought up by Herman in the treatise,we can use to summarize Herman general academic ideas,these are also the focuses on cognitive narratology.We study Herman and cognitive narratology,its purpose is not only in order to better interpretation,and,more importantly,in order to explore the narrative in perfect made great contribution to human cognitive mechanism.
