The translation material of this article "Handbook of Maritime Economics and Business" is mainly for maritime and shipping-related readers, which aims to spread knowledge of maritime economics and business.According to Reiss’s functional translation theory, this book belongs to the Content-Focused Text. Thus, conveying intact information is especially important. However, because of the differences in culture and mode of thinking between China and other English-speaking countries,it is natural that between the two languages of English and Chinese, there exist differences in vocabulary, syntax, grammar and other aspects. Therefore, most English sentences cannot be directly translated into Chinese. In order to obtain a translation version that is smooth, expressive and consistent with the Chinese expression habits, sometimes it is necessary to add some words, phrases,or sentences into the target language. With"Handbook of Maritime Economics and Business" as translation material, combined with specific translation cases, this article discusses in detail the use of amplification in maritime text translation. The amplification involves two aspects:the first is the amplification of lexical items, and the second is the amplification based on English grammar.Vocabulary amplification includes the addition of verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and conjunctions in the target language(TL).Grammar amplification involves the addition of tense and plural form of nouns in Chinese. The practice of translation shows that through the use of amplification, the semantics of TL can be clearer, and the sentence structure is better-organized,more compact and the text is more fluent and natural.
