The Belt and Road Initiative proposed by the Chinese government, including the construction of "Silk Road Economic Belt" and the "21 St-Century Maritime Silk Road"cooperation initiatives has brought about cultural exchanges and economic development along the lines. Therefore, the translation of the geographical names of the "Maritime Silk Road" and the excavation and inheritance of the cultural connotation of the geographical names undoubtedly have profound implications and extremely important historical significance for the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road and for profounder interactions between China and the rest of the world. Two theories will be applied to the current study—translation compensation theory and theory of terminology to solve the problem of inaccurate, incomplete and non-standard translation of geographical names along the "21st-Century Maritime Silk Road".In the process of this research, geographical names are firstly put into three major categories, namely names of countries and cities, seas and straits, and ports.Different translation strategies are used for the translation of domestic and foreign geographical names. Methods of experimental summary and case study will be applied in the translation compensation study of geographical names. The compensated contents will be generally the geography, history, culture and current social situation of those places and the important roles that they play on the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road. These geographical names will be standardized into terminologies.Compensation will be evaluated from the perspectives of function, reader response, culture and aesthetics. The compensation of geographical names should have the characteristics of veracity, conciseness, normalization, and aesthetic values. So far,no one has contributed any monographic study in this regard. In addition, research on the study of translation compensation, will on the one hand provide theoretical guidance to further study of geographical names along the "Maritime Silk Road",and on the other hand standardize geographical names into proper nouns, and help the Chinese culture disseminate widely.Meanwhile, the study also enriches the connotation of translation studies, and makes contribution to the development of translation, especially in the field of maritime translation.
