Experts and scholars across the globe have issued or published a large number of research results in related fields.Domestic translation researchers have gradually begun to conduct in-depth research into meteorological texts while translating such documents. This thesis analyzes and studies the relative clauses in meteorological texts and the pronounced problems in the translation process with examples, with a view to summarizing the translation strategies for the meteorological texts.Through the case analysis and translation comparison, this thesis ferrets out the possibility of optimizing the translation of relative clauses. While carrying out the translation practice in this thesis, this thesis proceeds from the relative clauses in the meteorological texts, adopting such translation methods as combination, division and mixture to analyze the restrictive and non-restrictive relative clauses. In terms of the relative clauses acting as adverbial structures, this thesis translates them into corresponding subordinate complex sentences, such as the clause of reason, clause of result, clause of time, clause of condition, clause of purpose and clause of concession. The author applies the above-mentioned translation strategies to the study on translation of Essentials of Meteorology:An Invitation to the Atmosphere, discovering that with a flexible translation of the relative clauses in meteorological texts can be made possible, which is more natural and compliant with the habitual Chinese expressions, and at the same time, the translation is more in line with the habitual expression in Chinese without taking a toll on the rigor and logic of meteorological texts;it also helps readers to understand some meteorological concepts by well handling the translation of the relative clauses, which also makes for promoting the dissemination of relevant knowledge of meteorological texts, lending some references for the similar translation practice in the future. |
