| Lin Yutang is one of the bilingual writing writers in history of China,his English-Language Categories is abundant,most of which serve the purpose of “introduce Chinese culture to foreigners”,he often casts his ideal new national characters in the trans-context and intercultural writing by the dialogue and integration of Chinese and western culture.In this process,Lin Yutang has finished the construction of his inner self and overseas cultural identity and the reconstruction of Chinese(oriental)image in the system of world culture.The Gay Genius is his representative work in this respect.This thesis tries to analysis the image of Su Tung Po,which integrates the cultural factors at all times and both in China and abroad in Lin’s writing,to explore the critically inheritance and conversion of Chinese traditional culture which is mainly about Confucianism and Taoism,and the import and assimilation of modern western culture which takes democracy and freedom as the core,and then to revalue Lin’s bilingual writing in the mirror image of western culture,by which his bridge function in communication of Chinese and western culture would be emphasized.Meanwhile,taking the example of positive national image“Su Tung Po” moulded by him,this thesis explores the uniqueness of Lin in the exploration of national character in contemporary Chinese literature.This thesis is divided into three parts:Introduction,Main body and Concluding remarks.Introduction:this part is mainly about introducing Lin’s major works,writing causes of this thesis,relevant research summary,research method and innovation of thesis.The second part is main body,divided into four chapters.Chapter One is mainly analyzing “contemporary” reconstruction of the classical character“Su Tung Po”.In the respect of causes,this thesis puts an eye on both inner and outer sides:construction of his inner self and overseas cultural identity,and go further to show how Lin explains the image of “Su Tung Po” bilingually and what new image he displays.Chapter Two principally explores Lin’s assimilation and integration of Chinese ancient and modern culture by analyzing the cultural factors on “Su Tung Po” and other characters in Lin’s writing.Both examination or return of Chinese traditional culture as Confucianism and Taoism and inheritance or transcendence of spiritual literature are included.Chapter Three follows Chapter Two to probe into the origin of the factors of Chinese and western culture on Lin,and revalue Lin’s The Gay Genius as a cultural mirror image;And to emphasize Lin’s pluralist identification in the dialogue between Chinese culture and western culture and Lin’s “bridge function” in the communication of Chinese culture and western culture.Chapter Four,based on the former three,inspects Lin’s advance in exploration of national character in the chain of this exploration in the history of contemporary Chinese literature.By comparison,this chapter emphasizes the uniqueness and significance of Lin’s bilingual writing as The Gay Genius etc.for the exploration of national character.The third part is the Concluding remarks.This part briefly discusses the main merits of Lin’s bilingual writing,analyzes Lin’s cultural perspective and ideal of cultural integration and the effects of Lin himself in cultural exchange between China and the west,and goes further to summarize the distinctive significance of the positive national character represented by “Su Tung Po”which is moulded by Lin Yutang’s bilingual writing. |
