An Analysis Of Hollywood Science Films And Chinese Fantastic Films From The Perspective Of Cultural Hybridity

Science film has been a hot topic during these years,among the films that gained the highest office box in China,at least one third are Hollywood science films every year.Therefore,Chinese film makers attempt to establish a new kind of native science film to cater to the native audience and to resist America's cultural invasion.Then,Chinese fantastic film is born.Chinese fantastic film belongs to the same film genre as Hollywood science film—imaginary film.It is developed on the basis of imitating typical science film and for the aim to rival Hollywood science film's invasion.Post-colonialists think,in order to strengthen colonial authority,the western countries output their strong cultures to the third world countries.However,this cultural output is not a one-way process;the weak culture countries will not just accept it passively and mechanically.When the strong culture and weak culture contact with each other,the two kinds of cultures will communicate and interact with each other.Then a hybrid “third space” is produced,which is a way of weak culture to imitate and resist strong culture.Chinese fantastic film is a kind of hybrid “third space” produced in the process of imitating and resisting western science film.This paper aims to explore Hollywood science film and Chinese fantastic film based on the theory of cultural hybridity.Firstly,this thesis summarizes the previous researches about the theory of hybridity and Hollywood science film and Chinese fantastic film,and explains the theory of cultural hybridity.Then,from the perspective of cultural hybridity,the thesis analyzes Hollywood science film and Chinese fantastic film.As a cultural form,Hollywood science film conveys American political,economic,and cultural background under its entertainment appearance.It is not only a greatly shock to Chinese film industry,but also a kind of cultural penetration among Chinese audience.Chinese fantastic film is a distinctive film type developed under the influence of western science film,especially for Hollywood science film.It has both the typical features of traditional science film and distinctive Chinese native characteristics.So,it is a new kind of culture developed under the shock of western colonial culture,and isa hybrid “third space”.Through the analysis of hybridity in Chinese fantastic film,the author hopes to provide beneficial reference and suggestion for China or other third world countries in their way of resisting western cultural invasion and protecting native cultural industries.
