Analysis Of Labor-economizing Strategies Employed In Chinese-English Simultaneous Interpreting

With the rapid development of social economy and culture,cooperation and exchanges between various countries around the world has become even more close and frequent.When the two parties of cooperation and exchanges employ different languages,interpreter who serves as a bridge during the communication has played an increasingly prominent role.Among different types of interpreting,simultaneous interpreting has received much concern because of its unique instantaneity.Simultaneous interpreting is a kind of translation practice during which the interpreter uses one language to express thoughts and feelings of another language almost at the same pace with the speaker in oral form.It requires that the interpreter should deal with multiple tasks at work,in other words,listening,analyzing,memorizing and producing target language should be completed almost at the same time.When evaluating the quality of an interpreting activity,the integrity of information has always been one of the important quality assessment indicators.However,as a result of the instantaneity of simultaneous interpreting immediacy,even an excellent interpreter is unlikely to report all of the information in source language.Thus,the only choice of an interpreter is to employ strategies in order to report as much information as possible and omit or simplify some information when necessary on purpose of ensuring the smoothness of the activity.This is what we called the labor-economizing strategy in simultaneous interpreting.Through the author’s own learning experience of interpretation,the author conducts a systematic analysis of the specific methods and effect of the application of the labor-economizing strategy in simultaneous interpreting.This thesis is based on two simulation cases,namely " Let Us Join Hands and Tide over Difficulties Together—Remarks by President Hu Jintao at the Second G20 Financial Summit" and"Promote Growth Through Win-Win Cooperation-Remarks by President Hu Jintao at the Sixth G20 Summit" during which the author applied the labor-economizing strategy into practice.In this thesis,the author reviews the theories and doctrines put forward by former experts and scholars,including the Principle of Least Effort,Economical Principle,and so on.The most important two which guide the author’s study are Gile’s Effort Model and Paris School’s Interpretive Theory.Then,the author introduces the labor-economizing strategies employed in this thesis,respectively syntactic linearity,omission and simplification&generalization,and analyzes the application of these strategies.According to this analysis,the author finds out how and why is the labor-economizing strategy helpful for simultaneous interpreting as well as the weakness of the study which may offer a reference to the future study and research.
