A Pale View of Hills is Ishiguro Yiyu’s magnum opus.It tells the story of Sachiko and her daughter Mariko.The narrator Etsuko tries to tell Sachiko’s story to cover the trauma of the history,and brought the memories after immigration process because of the colonial relationship caused by the cultural identity anxiety.In the novel,the narrative technique used to describe memories,fragment plots,and both imaginary and real story scenes,disputes over whether to immigrate and the survival of the immigrate.However the things behind this is the game between two different cultural identity anxiety and inequality relationship between Japan and American two cultures.This article discusses from the following three sections.The first part is to take a brief introduction about A Pale View of Hills and the unreliable narration of the protagonist,then analyzes how to cut into from the perspective of post colonial theory in this novel.The colonization and the colonial relationship reflected in this novel are often caused by war,the invasion of cultural thought,etc.Therefore,the definition of the colonial relationship presented in the novel is more manifested in the cultural colonization of ideology.As the existence of colonial relationship has brought the cultural identity anxiety,in the second part of this article,it first briefly defines the identity,then explores/discusses the protagonist’s identity anxiety and their identity combining with the other novels of Ishiguro Yiyu.The third part of the paper is to reveal the truth behind the identity of the protagonists in Ishiguro Yiyu’s novels,and then analysis the protagonist’s two cultural identities.After longitudinal analysis of his whole books,it is known that Ishiguro Yiyu’s concern has been extended from individuals to the whole society.And thus presents the idea of building a cultural community.The concluding part of the thesis re-examines the application of post-colonial theory.Post-colonial theory itself contains the meaning of the colonists against,so when using the post-colonial theory to the analysis of the literary works,it reflects a kind of literary view against imperialism,colonialism,which fitted the idea of Ishiguro Yiyu in his work-to treat different cultural phenomena in a more equal and broad field of view.
