Joris Iven,a well-known director,is one of the early pioneers of the art form---documentary.From 1898 to 1989,he threw himself totally into recording films around the world.Shuttled in 20 countries,Iven created more than 80 moves. With the life passion and the communist faith,he took camera to detect the real world.Changing from the perspective of a film poet to a revolutionaries,Iven participated in the Spanish Civil War,the Chinese anti-Japanese War,and other people revolutions or struggles which fight for the independence and freedom, like Cuba and Vietnam. So he recorded these updates and changes in all corners of the earth.Whether it is in the political sense of the East or the West,or geographical location from south to north,Iven used shot as a weapon to support the group of people who fight against aggression and anti-oppression.The fifty years relationship between Joris Iven and China has gone through several stages. When the first time he came to China,he not only brought his own communist belief to "rescue" China, also completed a spiritual "self-salvation" in his own crisis of faith.Within the deep friendship,Joris Iven became an extremely important man, both in documentary history and social history. For Iven himself, whether as a politician or an artist,it is the "Chinese complex" that deeply engraved in his works and even in his life.In Joris Iven's film,China has completed a dialogue with the world. With his cameras,Iven not just witnessed the Chinese people who were involved in the Eastern anti-fascist war,the early "Great Leap Forward",but the Chinese people who draw in the "Cultural Revolution" and "chaos".From the film Four Million People(1938)to The Story Of Wind(1988),Iven returned to the "avant-garde" aesthetics.Because of the half a century contacts,he affectionately treated China as his "second homeland".No matter as a true "film poet" or as an ideal "movie warrior",Joris Iven broke through his ideological siege for cognition of China in twists and turns. Thus,he approached the core of Chinese culture and obtained a chance to have a soul dialogue between Chinese and Western. That may be the reason why he shot his last film in China, which perfectly embodies the meaning of the "self".In the last moments of his life,Iven chose the way of film to farewell life. With surrealist shooting techniques,he created a himself-portrait portrayal and symbol that is to pursue the ideals all life. The essay divides into six chapter.Introduction caontains essay proposal, research background, research aim and significance, the essay creation and reseatch status overview etc.Chapter one mainly dicusses development backgroudn of Evan creation and important documentary.Chapter two and three correspond, describing Evan's China complex during the creation and in documentary.Chapter three make the analysis based on the examples of Four Hundred Million People,Early Spring,The Old Foolish Man,and Story of Wing. And also make comparson between The Old Foolish Man and China from three aspects.Chapter four describes art representation of China comples in Evans documentary,o.e.Evans aesthetic expression in his documentary creation. The end describes Evans documentary film cultural value by combining the whole essay content.
