| The Appraisal Theory which includes Attitude system,Engagement system and Graduation system has received much attention since it was proposed.The Engagement system is used as a tool to adjust and negotiate the opinions of the writers or the speakers.Nowadays the engagement resources can be found and used in all kinds of discourses,such as academic discourses and social discourses.Thus,these resources directly reflect the writer’s or the speakers’ attitude or views to the problems.As we know,the news reports about migrant workers have become a heat topic in recent years.The government and the public have paid close attention to the problems of migrant workers and also have done a lot to relieve the problems.This thesis mainly adopts the Engagement system of AT as the theoretical framework to make comparison of thirty news reports selected from the China Daily and The News York Times(2012-2016).Firstly,the engagement resources in the thirty news reports are labelled.Then,establish two corpuses respectively and employ the analytic software--UAM Corpus Tool 3 to analyze the data in order to answer three research questions as follows:(1)How are engagement resources on news reports of migrant workers distributed in China Daily and The New York Times?(2)Are there any similarities or differences by utilizing the engagement system to describe the news reports of migrant workers in China Daily and The New York Times? If yes,what are they?(3)What kinds of ideological attitudes are embedded in the news reports of migrant workers in China Daily and The New York Times? Under the methods of qualitative and quantitative analysis,make a comparison of two corpuses to get the similarities and differences between China Daily and The New York Times about the news reports of migrant workers.The thesis consists of six parts.The first part mainly introduces the research background,purpose,significance and the framework of the thesis.The second part makes literature review from the aspects of previous studies on engagement,news discourse analysis on China Daily and The News York Times and on news reports of migrant workers.The third part explains specifically the framework of the thesis from two aspects including an introduction of the AT including Attitude system and Graduation system and the detailed presentation of Engagement system.The fourth part is about research questions,research instruments,research methods,data collection and research procedures.The fifth part includes three sections including global and local statistical study of engagement resources,comparison the engagement resources of migrant workers and analysis of specific engagement resources in the two newspapers.The last part presents the major findings of the thesis including the distributions of engagement resources,similarities and differences of the engagement resources in the two newspapers and also introduces the main reasons caused these differences.The major findings are presented from three aspects.Firstly,all of the engagement resources in two newspapers are unbalanced.The writers of two newspapers apply all kinds of engagement resources to report the news.Secondly,the Expansive resources are more than Contraction resources in both newspapers on news reports of migrant workers.There exist similarities in the Distance resources between two newspapers.The Disclaim resources are far more than Proclaim resources about news reports of migrant workers in both newspapers.The number of Attribute resources exceeds the number of Entertain resources in both newspapers.These results indicate that both two newspapers are objective and follow the rules of news reports on reporting the news about migrant workers.However,the total number of engagement resources in CD is less than that in TNYT.There are big differences between CD and TNYT The subsystem resources percentage of attribute is higher in CD than that in TNYT.The percentages of acknowledge resources and distance resources in CD are higher than that in TNYT.Under the Contraction system,the percentage of subsystem of Disclaim is higher in TNYT than that in CD.These differences indicate that TNYT are more subjective which aim to persuade the readers to accept their opinions in the news reports.Thirdly,the main reasons of these distinctions are the different ideological attitude and culture values between two countries.Hence,there exist similarities and differences between two newspapers in reporting the news about migrant workers.This thesis makes a contrastive of the engagement resources on news reports of migrant workers in CD and TNYT.This thesis may help the reader get more information about the Engagement system and also do some contributions to the migrant workers. |
