A Report On The E-C Translation Of Mechanical Specification For Pipe Work

The source text for this translation practice report is an English instruction set on pipe installation.Commissioned by Baye Installation Company in Jin Chang city,the translation was accomplished by the translator herself.The manual is a practical instruction set,which aims at spreading scientific knowledge and information so that the public can understand the function and characteristics of the product.The translation of English instructions,for one thing,makes it convenient for users in China;for another,it's helpful to the development of related technologies in China.This translation task is discussed in detail from 5 aspects: introduction,task description,translation process,cases analysis and conclusion.The first part introduces Palabora Mining Company Limited copper mine which is used as a practical example for pipeline installation.In the second part,the translator makes an analysis of the source text,discusses the characteristics of the information text,and clarifies the translation standard proposed by the client.In the third part,the translator discusses the translation process in detail from three aspects: pre-translation,translation and post translation.The translation preparation includes background information collection,translation tools and parallel text selection,the choice of translation method with skopos theory,selection of translation strategies and methods.In the last section,the translator includes a schedule and a glossary of terms.In the process of translation,the details of translation and the control of quality are described,and the opinions of the entrusting party and the other parties are presented.In the fourth part,the translator makes an analysis of 30 cases from three levels of the lexical,syntactic,and discourse.In addition,the translation clarifies specific translation methods step by step.For example,conversion,amplification,omission,division,combination,discourse cohesion and coherence.In the last part,the translator puts forward some unsolved problems,for example,such as professional vocabulary and translationese,the requirement to have bilingual ability to enhance the quality of translation,and the ability to sum up experiences and highlight defects.In this translation task,the translator has a basic knowledge on basic features of English equipment specifications,and is familiar with the relevant translation strategies.Having completed the translation task,the translator find this work not only increases the types of translation texts,but provides learning about the translation process of English instructions set.It also makes the translator pay particular attention to the cultivation of quality in translation.To be a translator,bilingual capacity is a necessity,while a cautious and responsible attitude really counts.
