Kramsch's Method Of Teaching English Vocabulary In Junior High School

In the field of second language vocabulary acquisition,the effectiveness-comparison of different lexical teaching methods still holds numerous researchers' attention.Kramsch's method with its great efficacy in the lexical teaching and maneuverability attracts lots of researchers' attention.However,so far scholars at home have not investigated deeply on this method.Thus,this thesis aims to discuss the two questions according to Kramsch's method of teaching vocabulary.(1).Can Kramsch's method of teaching vocabulary improve students' ability of using words in contexts?(2).Is Kramsch's method of teaching vocabulary more effective in students' retention of productive vocabulary ?The thesis mainly adopted experimental method to finish the study.The participants of this thesis is composed of two parallel classes in Grade nine in Lanzhou No.45 middle school,the total number of the students is 74.According to their final exam scores,both the two classes were on the equivalent levels.Thus,one of them was randomly selected as the experimental class and the other as the control class.Both the teaching material and English class were the same.The experimental class adopted Kramsch's method of teaching vocabulary,but the control class adopted the traditional method of teaching vocabulary.The whole study consisted of three phrases: pretest,the experiment and post-test.All students were required to take part in the pretest in order to test what their lexical size and to which degree they learned the words in order to ensure the effectiveness of this thesis.When the experiment was completed,post-test was completed.Finally,the data collected through the vocabulary post-test were collected and analyzed by SPSS 17.0.Through analyzing the data,this thesis drew the following conclusions:(1)Kramsch's method of teaching vocabulary can improve students' ability of using words in contexts.With this method,the students can process the target words deeply,can use the proper forms of the target words in the blank-filling tasks according to the relevant requirements and make sentences with the target words.Students can not only learned the forms and meanings,the relevant grammatical knowledge of the target words,and used the words in contexts.(2)Kramsch's method of teaching vocabulary is more effective in the retention of productive vocabulary.The study of this method made it possible that students can not only write the target words but also their proper forms with the help of the letter-cued sentences and their Chinese meanings.And this process in fact achieved the goal of putting what was learned into practice.In conclusion,it is a effective way to employ Kramsch's method of teaching vocabulary in junior highschool,because it can improve students' ability to use their productive vocabulary and has a tremendous effect on productive vocabulary retention.Therefore,it is necessary for the English teachers in junior high schools to apply this method to their teaching in the future teaching process.
