This paper attempts to study John Donne's An Anatomy of the World.shortened as The Anatomy hereafter,as a trinity of lamentation, glorification, and consolation. As the most important single poem by John Donne.Anatomy of the World has not receivecd its due attention from critics around the world, who mostly refer to this poem either as background knowledge or as basic arguments for their penetration into other poems by Donne.Existing publications available are found only in America and British,in which the focus is solely on the structure of the poem.A thematic perspective still awaits our discovery. The only book on theme of this poem is by Martz who read it as a lamentation. But the poem is more than this.It is also a panegyric and a consolation. The purpose is to reveal how John Donne was able to put all of these into a relatively short poem of 474 lines.
