A Study On C-E Translation Of Cultural Specific Items From The Perspective Of Function Plus Loyalty In Yang Xianyi’s Version Of Selected Stories Of Lu Xun

Lu Xun was a famous writer during the period of Republic of China,and he had written many famous stories in his whole life.Many works of Lu Xun had been translated into English and spread into foreign countries,and this thesis chooses the cultural specific items in Selected Stories of Lu Xun which was translated by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang(hereinafter referred as Yang’s version)as the research topic.Yang Xianyi was a famous writer and translator in China,and he devoted himself to C-E translation of Lu Xun’s stories all his life.At present,there are a lot of studies of C-E translation about Lu Xun’s stories,but there are still less systematic studies of Selected Stories of Lu Xun under some certain theories.And the previous studies about C-E translation of Lu Xun’s stories mostly focused on the meaning equivalence between the source text and the target text from the perspective of functional equivalence,while studies on C-E translation of Lu Xun’s stories from the perspective of culture were often ignored.Therefore,this thesis makes an analysis of C-E translation of cultural specific items in Lu Xun’s stories under the guidance of Nord’s Function Plus Loyalty theory in order to spread Chinese culture to the west and to promote the exchange of Chinese and western culture.According to the classification of culture by Nida in his book Language,Culture and Translation,139 pieces of cultural specific items have been chosen from Yang’s version of Selected Stories of Lu Xun,including 28 pieces of material culture,64 pieces of social culture,14 pieces of religious culture,13 pieces of linguistic culture,14 pieces of ecological culture as well as 6 pieces of historical allusion culture.With the analysis of C-E translation strategy on these cultural specific items under the guidance of Function Plus Loyalty,it has been found that foreignizing translation is employed in most cases to keep the original flavor of source text on the premise that the function of the target text can be achieved to some extent with the consideration of the target readers’factor.Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang had translated a lot of classic literature to introduce excellent Chinese heritage and to carry forward Chinese civilization.He regards "faithfulness" "expressiveness" and "elegance" as the criteria of translation,among which "faithfulness" is the first principle.Therefore,after carefully analyzing the function of the source text and the target text together,Yang Xianyi made all his efforts to keep the original flavor to the largest extent when translating Selected Stories of Lu Xun.In the meanwhile,the function of the target text can be achieved,that is,the translation can be fully understood and accepted by the target readers.
