This thesis aims to explore the translation of adventure novels from the angle of register theory. The source text is the first two chapters in The World of Ice,by English Victorian author Robert Michael Ballantyne. How to translate according to the register theory, and how to better present the masculinity in this adventure novels to Chinese young readers,is the main theme of this thesis. The first part of this thesis gives a brief introduction of the background, including register theory and the characters of Victorian adventure fiction, stating the reason why I choose register theory as the guide theory of Victorian adventure fiction translation. The second part elaborates the examples from the aspects of tenor, field and mode, especially the examples presenting masculinity of the men in the original work as well as the translation strategies applied, which better presents the idea of masculinity. The last part of the thesis is conclusion, which summarizes the whole thesis and explains that under the register theory, the Victorian adventure novels could be better translated.Previous studies on translation under register theory emphasize on translation of texts with functional stylistic features such as practical writing and children's literature, while this thesis emphasizes on the study of certain literature characteristic in original text and methods to embody this character in translation. With register theory,we may analyze the feature of the original work more objectively and this offer a new way for translators in literary translation.
