Objective:To systematically evaluate the correlation between phosphorylated STAT3 protein and prognosis and clinicopathological characteristics of gastric cancer patients. Methods:To retrieve the published research on the expression and clinical significance of p-STAT3 protein in gastric cancer from database establishment to June 2019 in PubMed,Embase,The Cochrance Library,Wanfang,CNKI and VIP databases, the literatures were screened according to inclusion and exclusion criteria and the relevant data were extracted.Revman 5.3 and Stata 12.0 software were used for the Meta-analysis.Results:A total of 13 articles and 1307 patients with gastric cancer were included. The results of this Meta-analysis suggested that high expression of p-STAT3 protein was associated with poor prognosis in patients with gastric cancer [HR=2.38,95%CI(1.89,3.01),P<0.00001] and the expression of p-STAT3 protein in gastric cancer was associated with tumor differentiation degree [poorly vs well-moderately: OR=3.08,95%CI(1.92,4.93),P<0.00001],TNM stage [III/IV vs I/II: OR=2.87,95%CI(1.75,4.71),P<0.0001],lymph node metastasis [present vs absent: OR=2.53,95%CI(1.35,4.73),P=0.004],distant metastasis [absent vs present: OR=0.17,95%CI(0.09,0.36),P<0.00001] and depth of invasion [T3/T4 vs T1/T2: OR=2.74,95%CI(1.66,4.53),P<0.0001],however,no statistical differences existed in gender [OR=0.97,95%CI(0.74,1.27),P=0.82],age [OR=0.75,95%CI(0.53,1.06),P=0.10],tumor size [OR=0.76,95%CI(0.55,1.05),P=0.10].Conclusion:The expression of p-STAT3 protein has significant correlation with poorer prognosis of gastric cancer patients,as well as with tumor differentiation degree,TNM stages, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis and depth of invasion.Thus,meta-analysis suggests that the increased p-stat3 expression may not only serve a biomarker for poor prognosis in gastric cancer but also play a regulatory role in the development of gastric cancer.
