Bacground Coronary heart disease(CHD)is a serious threat to human health. It is particularly important to explore its risk factors and thus identify potential preventive and therapeutic targets.Although secondary prevention against traditional risk factors has achieved considerable results, many patients lack of traditional risk factors do not benefit from it.Pyruvate Kinase M2(PKM2),one of the isozymes of pyruvate kinase,is thought to be involved in pathological processes of atherosclerosis through introducing an inflammatory response.Object In this study,we aimed to investigate the relationship between pyruvate kinase M2 levels and coronary heart disease. Methods A total of 264 adult subjects were enrolled in the study. All patients were underwent coronary angiography. All patients were divided into patients with CHD(n=177)and patients without CHD(n=87).Gensini score was used to measure the severity of coronary artery disease.Serum PKM2 levels were determined by enzymelinked immunosorbent assay(ELISA).Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were employed to investigate the relationship between PKM2 levels and the presence of coronary heart disease.Spearman correlation analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between serum PKM2 levels and Gensini scores. Results Baseline data analysis showed that there was a statistically significant difference in age, gender, history of smoking, hypertension, diabetes, fasting blood glucose(FBG),high-density lipoprotein(HDL-c),urea(Bun),creatine kinase isoenzyme(CK-MB),NT-pro BNP,high-sensitivity C-reactive protein(hs-CRP)and homocysteine(Hmc)between CHD and NCHD groups(p<0.05).The CHD group had a higher PKM2 level than the NCHD group [0.24(0.20-0.43)ng/ml vs 0.37(0.23-0.73)ng/ml],P=0.003.Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that serum PKM2 level was the independent predictor of coronary heart disease [OR=3.933(1.354-11.421),P=0.012].Spearman correlation analysis showed that serum PKM2 levels were positively correlated with Gensini scores(r=0.227,P=0.046).Conclusion The study showed a positive correlation between serum PKM2 and CAD in a Chinese population.Serum PKM2 levels are associated with the presence and severity of CAD and coronary artery lesions.PKM2 in serum may be a potential biomarker for predicting CAD.
