| Objective: The prognostic value of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2(HER2)in gastric cancer is controversial.The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between HER2 expression and and clinicopathological features and prognosis of gastric cancer to help clinical work.Methods: The clinical data of 2077 patients who underwent gastrectomy at the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University from January 2013 to September 2017 and whose tissue samples were clearly diagnosed as gastric cancer or gastroesophageal junction cancer were collected.The distributions between HER2 expression levels and clinicopathological characteristics were compared using the Chi-square test.The relationship between HER2 level and overall survival were evaluated with the univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis.Results: 1.HER2 status was positive in 192 patients(9.2%),negative in 1534patients(73.9%)and equivocally in 351patients(16.9%).2.HER2 expression was statistically significant associated with age(P =0.033),tumor location(P =0.003),tumor differentiation(P <0.001)and Lauren classification.3.The overall survival(OS)between1534 HER2 negative patients and 192 HER2 positive patients was compared and no statistically significant survival difference was found for 1-year OS(69.0%vs 69.4%,P= 0.760)and 3-year OS(57.5%vs 59.7%,P = 0.550)or 5-year OS(28.8%vs 31.6%,P =0.495).No significant associations were observed between HER2 expression level and OS rate in the uni-and multivariate analyses.Conclusions: 1.The HER2 overexpression rate in gastric cancer was 9.2%.2.HER2 overexpression was observed in older years,gastroesophageal junction,moderate or high differentiation according to the histologic differentiation,intestinal subtype by the Lauren classification.3.HER2 is not an independent prognostic marker for gastric cancer. |
