Objective: Chronic ankle instability which characterized by persistent pain and swelling of the ankle,"giving away" and self-perceived decrease of ankle function,is one of the most common sports injuries, destroying posture stability of patients.Kinesio taping is used widely in the prevention and treatment of CAI patients because of the properties that non-invasive,convenient and unrestricted joint movement. However, there are few studies exploring the effect of KT on the proprioception and postural stability of individuals with CAI and existing research results are in great contradictory. This study aimed to explore the immediate effect of KT on proprioception and postural stability of individuals with CAI in order to provide related reference for clinical practice. Methods: Participants with CAI received four different ankle treatments randomly, including KT,athletic taping(AT),sham taping(ST),and no taping(NT).The threshold for detection of passive movement was measured after taping immediately. Then, the anterior,medial-posterior and lateral-posterior distance of Y balance test were measured. Moreover,a series of postural stability measurements was performed using Computerized Dynamic Posturography(CDP)subsequently. The measurements included sensory organization test(SOT),unilateral stance(US),limit of stability(LOS),motor control test(MCT),and adaption test(ADT).In addition,self-perceived sensation was measured through visual analogue scaling. All data are analyzed through SPSS 20.0,repeated measures analysis of variance was conducted to determine whether the difference among KT,AT,ST,and NT was significant,Bonferroni test was used for post hoc analysis. The significant difference was P <0.05.Results:(1)For threshold for detection of passive movement, there was no significant difference for different taping conditions in direction of ankle plantarflexion, dorsiflexion and inversion. In addition, there was a significant difference for different taping conditions in eversion(P =0.043),However,no significant difference in pairedcomparison.(2)For reach distance of Y balance test, there was a significant difference for different taping conditions in anterior-distance(P =0.028),but there was no significant difference in paired-comparison.Additionally,there was no significant difference for different taping conditions in posterior-medial and posterior-lateral direction.(3)For computerized dynamic postural control measurement,no significant difference was observed for parameters in SOT,and US in four different taping treatments. In LOS,there was no significant difference for different taping conditions in reaction time, movement velocity, endpoint excursion and directional control. For directional control,a significant difference(P =0.044)in maximal excursion in right direction was observed and post-hoc analysis showed that ST was higher than AT significantly(P =0.022).However,no significant difference was observed in other directions. In MCT,a significant difference(P <0.001)was observed in forward-small slip and post-hoc analysis showed that the amplitude scaling scores of KT were 35.87% lower than that of NT significantly(P <0.001).And a significant difference(P =0.025)was observed in backward-large slip and post-hoc analysis showed that KT was 21.58% lower than that of ST significantly(P =0.035).However,there was no significant difference for different taping conditions during the other direction and amplitudes slips. In ADT,significant difference(P =0.044)was observed in toes-up direction of platform and sway energy scores were 7.59% greater in ST than that of AT significantly(P =0.028).However,no significant difference was found for different taping conditions in toes-down direction of platform.(4)For perceived stability, there was a significant difference for different taping conditions(P <0.001).Post-hoc analysis showed that the perceived stability scores of KT was greater significantly than that of ST(P <0.001)and NT(P <0.001),and AT was greater significantly than that of ST(P=0.001)and NT(P <0.001).For perceived comfort, there was a significant difference for different taping conditions(P<0.001).Post-hoc analysis showed that the perceived stability scores of KT was greater significantly than that of AT(P =0.001)and NT(P =0.031),and ST was greater significantly than that of AT(P =0.007).Conclusion: KT has limited effect to facilitate kinesthesia, sensory organization and voluntary dynamic postural control for CAI individuals. However,KT and AT could provide effective support to cope with sudden perturbation. Moreover,KT may have some psychological placebo effect because of excellent perceived stability and comfort.
