Background: Fibroblast growth factor 21(FGF21)belongs to the FGF family, which Plays an important role in glucose and lipid metabolism.Recently, some studies found a positive correlation between FGF21 and diabetic vascular complications, whereas some others reported no significant associations. The association between FGF21 and diabetic vascular complications remained unclear. Objective : The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the association between FGF21 and diabetic vascular complications. Methods: We searched PubMed,EMBASE,Web of science for relevant observational studies that evaluated the association between serum FGF21 and diabetic nephropathy, diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macrovascular complications. Results: Ten studies were included in the final meta-analysis.Overall,Patients with high levels of FGF21 compared which with low levels experienced a significantly increased odds for diabetic nephropathy(odds ratio [OR]: 1.12 [95% CI: 1.01 to 1.23;p < 0.05].There was no associationbetween FGF21 and diabetic retinopathy(OR: 0.91 [95% CI: 0.77 to 1.05];p > 0.05).There was no association between FGF21 and diabetic macrovascular diseases neither(OR: 1.05 [95% CI: 0.97 to 1.14];p > 0.05).Conclusions: In the present meta-analysis,we found that for diabetic patients, which with higher levels of FGF21 experienced a significantly increased odd risk for diabetic nephropathy and there were no association between FGF21 and diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macrovascular disease. These may suggest FGF21 could be used as a biomarker in the detection of diabetic nephropathy.
