Radiotherapy is indispensable in the comprehensive treatment of malignant tumors. In a certain range, the higher the irradiation dose, the higher the tumor control rate, but often because of the limitation of the maximum tolerated dose of the tumor adjacent to the normal organ, the tumor dose is difficult to reach the expected value.Radioprotective agent is a kind of substance which can increase the radiation dose of tumor by increasing the tolerance dose of normal tissue or protecting normal tissue from radiation damage. At present, with the development of computer technology, radiotherapy technology is changing with each passing day,but the side effects can not be completely avoided because of the influence of the tolerance dose limit of adjacent normal organs on the control rate of malignant tumors. In the course of radiotherapy, radiation side effects are often produced on oral and digestive mucosa, skin, local sensitive glands, and radiation sensitive organs.Although many studies have shown that there are many kinds of radiation-protective substances in nature, there is little that can serve the clinic. The research of radioprotective agents which can be used in clinic is expected urgently. The mechanism of action ofradioprotective agent is complex. This paper will discuss the mechanism of radioprotective agent and its clinical application.
