Aim:Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES)database combined meta-analysis were used to investigate the correlation between diabetes mellitus and age-related macular degeneration(AMD).Furthermore, the potential effects of DM on different types of AMD were analyzed. Methods:Firstly, the cross-sectional statistics of the NHANES from 2005 to 2008 were analyzed.Subjects who were>40 years old with retinal photograph and diabetes-related records were screened and included. The relationship between diabetes mellitus and AMD was explored through logistic regression models. In order to further confirm the relationship between them,a meta-analysis was performed by searching the relevant literature in the PubMed,Embase, and Cochrane Library in conjunction with the results of the NHANES study.Review Manager and Stata were used for statistical analysis of the contained data.Results:Finally,5604 individuals included in NHANES cross-sectional study. No relevance between diabetes mellitus and AMD was indicated through multivariate logistic regression methods(p=0.79).However,the meta-analysis of 18 studies with data from 1815,683 participants indicated that diabetes mellitus was a risk factor for AMD(RR:1.15,95%CI:1.06-1.24,p<0.01),especially for neovascular AMD(nAMD)(RR:1.39,95%CI:1.22-1.58,p<0.01).Nevertheless,there was no enough evidence about the correlation between diabetes mellitus and early AMD(RR:0.93,95%CI:0.84-1.03,p=0.15)and geographic atrophy(GA)(RR:1.03,95%CI:0.98-1.09,p=0.26).Conclusions:There is a certain risk correlation between diabetes mellitus and AMD.People with diabetes mellitus may have an increased risk of AMD and are more likely to develop nAMD at a later stage.More attention should be paid to AMD screening when treating DM patients.
