Objective:Explore the feasibility of MRI measurement of neonatal pineal gland volume, explore the correlation between neonatal pineal gland(PG)volume and postmenstrual age(PMA)growth after conception, and explore neonatal pineal gland volume development related factors;Explore the correlation between pineal gland size and sleep quality and sleep arousal behavior in newborns.Research materials:Neonates admitted to the pediatrics department of Children's Hospital of Soochow University and completed 3.0T MRI examinations during hospitalization were selected from October 2018 to December 2019.A total of 102 patients matched fulled termed children were included?Their fetal age(prematurity was corrected)at MRI examination was distributed from 32.0W to 43.3W.Methods:All subjects received a high-resolution MRI scan of the whole brain,three-dimensional fast spoiled gradient-recalled sequences(3D-FSPGR)were used to obtain pineal gland structure images.Volumetric measurement of the PG and measured value statistics were performed by manual segmentation at a computer-side image processing station.Collect general clinical data such as birth information, discharge diagnosis and calculate PMA at MRI examination of all subjects.Based on the improvement of the subject's discharge from the hospital, the follow-up subjects' sleep quality was followed up,and parents were instructed to obtain the sleep-wake behavior information of the subjects by recording the sleep diary, and collect the sleep diary for data statistics. Finally, the statistical research data was entered into the database and analyzed and processed using SPSS 25.0 software.Results:1.The average volume of the neonatal pineal gland is(6.65±2.33)mm3,we confirmed the remarkable correlation between gestational age and pineal gland volume(r=0.522,P=0.001),and no gender difference of neonatal pineal gland volume.2.The pineal gland volumes of the hypperbilimbinemia newborns were smaller than not infected newborns(t=3.042,P=0.002)3.The difference in pineal gland volume between newborns with poor sleep quality and those with good sleep quality was statistically significant((poor sleep quality group<good sleep quality,P=0.037).4.There was no correlation between the pineal gland volume in preterm infants and the total 24h sleep duration and the average number of nightly awakenings(both P>0.05);there was a positive correlation between the pineal gland volume in preterm infants and the longest sleep duration at night(r=0.46,P<0.05).);The pineal gland volume of term infants had no correlation with their total sleep duration of 24 hours and the longest sleep time at night(both P>0.05);the pineal gland volume of term infants had a negative correlation with the number of nightly awakenings(r=-0.39,P=<0.05).Conclusion:(1)This present study provided a range of pineal gland volume measurements for newborns, and founded the pineal gland volumes increase with gestational age;(2)The study found that neonatal hyperbilirubinemia may cause pineal gland cells damage and change in newborn pineal gland morphology;(3)Newborns with poor sleep quality may have smaller pineal gland volume, and newborns with a larger pineal gland volume will be sleep better at night.
