Purpose:Using magnetic resonance texture analysis technology to explore the hippocampal texture features of Type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)with cognitive impairment and its correlation with cognitive function,so as to evaluate the value of texture analysis in T2DM with cognitive impairment, and then provide early neuroimaging evidence.Materials and methods:76 subjects were recruited, including 38 T2DM with cognitive impairment(19 males and 19 females),6 T2DM without cognitive impairment(males)and 32 healthy controls(17 males and 15 females). Our study used three-dimensional T1-weighted imaging texture analysis extract 428 features(4×107)from the caudal and head parts of the bilateral hippocampus.A Chi-square test was used for gender comparisons, and one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA)was used for age, education and neuropsychological test comparisons.ANOVA with Bonferroni's post hoc test was employed to evaluate the differences between the T2DM with cognitive impairment,T2DM without cognitive impairment and controls groups at each subregion(p<0.05).To assess the association between texture feature and cognitive ability,Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated to evaluate the relationships between the identified features and Montreal Cognitive Assessment(MoCA)(p<0.05)Results:ANOVA showed that 32 features exhibited statistically significant group differences in caudal and head parts of the bilateral hippocampus(p<0.05).Among these features,3 were significantly correlated with MoCA scores in T2DM with cognitive impairment(p<0.05).Among the 3 significantly correlated features,2 features are different between pair-wise differences(p<0.05).Conclusion:The results indicated that texture analysis could detect the subtle texture differences between patients with T2DM with cognitive impairment,T2DM without cognitive impairment and controls, especially Size Zone Nonuniformity Normalized and Busyness can be used to identify the three groups, which helping to improve the early diagnosis ability of T2DM with cognitive impairment.Texture analysis also provides encouraging evidence for texture analysis as a potential neuroimaging marker for clinical application of T2DM with cognitive impairment.
