Objective To explore women's experience about miscarriage after assisted reproduction technology of IVF-ET treatment,to understand the impact of miscarriage on women as well as the approach that women adopted to cope and adjust to the event,so as to help the public to understand the unique experience of this group of women and provide quality nursing care to them.Methods Using a descriptive qualitative research method,purposive sampling was adopted to recruit participants from one traditional Chinese medicine gynecological department in one Grade A Class 3 hospital in Zhejiang province.Ten women who miscarriaged after IVF treatment participated in the study.Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were used to collect data.The interview records were transcribed verbatim,and the data were analyzed using conventional content analysis methods.The common themes were summarized and refined continuously.Results Five themes were identified:the hardship of the IVF treatment,inlcuding assuming IVF treatment as easy,complex process of IVF treatment,physical harm caused by IVF treatment,psychological stress of IVF treatment,roller coaster mood;the interpersonal experience of IVF treatment,including social embarrassment caused by infertility,lack of understanding from others,sympathy from peer patients;psychological reaction about miscarriage,including unexpectedness and at a loss,suspecious and deny,confusion and puzzled,sad and upset,disappointment and self-blame,fear and scary,embarrassment and loss of face;coping after miscarriage,including face the consequence calmly,feel relieved after downward comparison,distract attention,seeking spiritual ballast,weakening the importance of children,considering other possibilities;reflecting after miscarriage,including everything has a right time and there is cost if one miss the chance,life is not perfect,yet there is no regret as long as one tries one's best.Conclusion The miscarriage women who conceived from IVF-ET have multiple sources of stress.They have high expectation towards fertility outcome yet lack of adequate mental preparation and their inner experiences are complicated.Some of them can gain positive experience and insight after a period of adjustment.Nurses should offer correct psychological intervention and guidance for this group of women so as to improve their mental health.
