Objective: Facial features vary in size and proportions between different races. It is necessary for surgeons to consider the racial and gender differences in soft tissue of the lips when designing an operation for orthodontics and oral and maxillofacial plastic surgery. This study aimed to measure the anthropometric variables of the labial region in Han Chinese young adults. Methods: A total of 900 college students(475 male and 425 female)of Chinese Han ethnicity from the northern China were included. The measured person's Frankfurt plane(FH)is parallel to the ground, and 14 linear indicators of the lip are measured using the direct measurement method(Rudolf Martin),and 7 exponential relationships are calculated.Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software.Male and female measurements and ratios were compared using Student's t test(a = 0.05).The Pearson test was used to determine the correlation between the numerator and the denominator of the index. Results: All the linear measurements of the males were significantly higher than that of the females(all P < 0.001).Significant gender differences were found in the philtrum morphology, philtrum width, upper vermilion-cutaneous lip, lower vermilion-cutaneous lip,and vermilion. Conclusion: There are significant differences in the anthropometric variables of the labial region between male and female Han Chinese young adults.Compared with the white people in the north of the United States, our Chinese Han population is narrower and the lower lip height is smaller, but the upper lip is high, the upper lip is red and the lower lip is red and thick, which is consistent with previous research results. Our study also found that the Han people's upper lip index and lower lip index were larger than those of North Americans. This finding is consistent with the fact that Asian lips are more plump than Caucasian lips. This study established a database of anthropometrics of the lip of the Han nationality in the northern region. These data may be used as a reference standard for labial reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.
