Objective:To compare the operation outcomes of appendectomies performed emergently?<24hrs of hospital presentation?to those delayed and done at a time>24hrs of Hospital presentationMethods:This study was a retrospective analysis of records of patients admitted in the 2ndDepartment of General surgery of the China Medical University2ndd Affiliated Hospital between Jan 2017 to Jan 2019 with the diagnosis of acute appendicitis and receiving appendectomy before discharge.Patients diagnosed with chronic appendicitis, those receiving non operative treatments, those receiving appendectomy combined with other procedures, pregnant patients and those with incomplete or duplicated files were excluded. We classified the patients into two groups. Those treated with emergent surgery and those receiving delayed surgery.Data analysis was done using Student's t Test or Pearson?^2 where appropriate while considering p<0.05 as statistically significant. Results:In 146 cases of Acute appendicitis,123?84.2%?were treated with emergent appendectomy and there was no significant difference regarding their complications profile, operative time, length of stay post-operatively or recovery of bowel movement when compared with delayed operations, but the amount of blood loss was significantly increased in emergent cases?p=0.028?.Conclusion:Delayed appendectomy done after 24hrs of hospital presentation doesn't increase complications in patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis.
