Objective To evaluate pulmonary function in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis(CRS),and to investigate the factors that affects pulmonary function. Methods Pulmonary function were detected in 144 patients with CRS(which contains 99 cases of CRSwNP and 45 cases of CRSsNP)and 144 age-matched non-CRS control subjects. In addition, all the CRS patients were measured by the Visual Analogue Scale(VAS),Johansson endoscopic Score, and Lund-Mackay Score(LMS)and detected with serological indicator of allergic factors. The Pearson or Spearman correlation and multiple linear regression methods were used to analyze the relationship between their pulmonary function and the above parameters. Results The pulmonary function index FVC?FEV1?FEV1/FVC?MEF?MEF25-75 of CRS group were significantly lower than those of matched group and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05),and the pulmonary function index FVC?FEV1?FEV1/FVC?PEF?MEF?MEF25-75 of CRSwNP group were significantly lower than CRSsNP group and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05),the pulmonary function index FVC?FEV1?FEV1/FVC?PEF of CRSwNP group were significantly lower than those of matched group and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The pulmonary function index FEV1?FEV1/FVC of patients in CRSwNP group patients was negatively correlated with Lund-Mackay Score(LMS)?Johansson endoscopic Score ?Visual Analogue Scale(VAS)and peripheral eosinophil count(PEC),whereas the pulmonary function index of CRSsNP group are not correlated with all the parameters above. Conclusions Chronic rhinosinusitis can lead to a decrease in pulmonary function. The CRS patients without clinically diagnosed lower respiratory tract disease might have had latent, subclinical lower airway lesions. The degree of the decrease of pulmonary function is related to the severity of chronic rhinosinusitis and the existence of nasal polyps.
