Vocabulary is the basic part of language and foundation of language learning.From the perspective of cognitive linguistics,it is the process of naming,classifying and acquiring external entities,and it is also the cognitive process of linguistic categorization.Language iconicity refers to the relationship between the signifier and signified,revealing the essential connection between the language phenomenon and human thinking.The iconicity theory stresses that the relationship between the linguistic form and corresponding meaning is justified.So,it is significant attempt to remember pharmacy English vocabulary based on the rationality between iconic form and meaning.Pharmacy English vocabulary is the basis of pharmacy English learning.It is a powerful guarantee for pharmacy college students to improve their ability to read and write further.It is also the key to students' ability to read foreign literature at high speed.Pharmacy English vocabulary is a connection of vocabulary in the fields of medicine,biology,chemistry,pharmacy,physic,mythology and religion.Due to the professionalism and difficulty of spelling,pharmacy English vocabulary teaching hasalways been difficult in pharmacy English..It is not ideal to use traditional method to remember it.As a consequence,from the perspective of iconicity theory,the thesis aims to study the validity of vocabulary learning and memory for pharmacy college students.Based on the theory of Pierce's Symbolic Trichotomy and Haiman's Syntactic Iconicity and it is guided by iconicity theory and elaborates the phonetic,morphological,semantic and etymology iconicity to apply in pharmacy English vocabulary teaching.Two research hypotheses are proposed:(1)From the perspective of iconicity theory,it has a positive impact on the methods.(2)From the perspective of iconicity theory,it can enhance the effect of memorizing pharmacy English vocabulary.The research objects are college students who major in pharmacy in Baotou Medical College,Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology.The class one is an experimental class,class two acts as a control class.The experimental class mainly used the vocabulary teaching method guided by iconicity theory,and the control class does not make any interference,it still use the traditional method.The study mainly based on experimental method,supplemented by questionnaires and interview.It lasts 13 weeks.Through the experimental method and interview,pharmacy college students no longer use a single,traditional method to learn vocabulary.They use the specific methods more frequently which are guided byiconicity theory.After the experiment,the average score of the experimental class was 4 points higher than that of the control class.So the learning and memory effect of the experimental class is significantly higher than that of the control class.Based on the above research results,the author combines the application of iconicity theory in pharmacy English vocabulary teaching,and puts forward some suggestions and inspirations for the future teaching.Teachers should pay attention to vocabulary teaching and adopt different vocabulary teaching forms in order to improve the effect of vocabulary learning..
