Hypertrophic Scar is a pathological phenomenon, characterized by abnormal deposition of extracellular matrix components and excessive fibrosis, after skin injury. The application of objective and reliable scar assessment is the key to evaluating the effectiveness of scar diagnosis, clinical therapies and comparative studies. Objective: To study the clinical value of detecting hypertrophic scar thickness with using high frequency ultrasound. Methods: First of all,we measured the ratios of the dermis and epidermis thickness in both hypertrophic scars and normal skins with high-frequency ultrasound, and analyzed the correlation between the dermis and epidermis thickness ratios of hypertrophic scars and thickness of pathological sections in H&E stain. Then,we analyzed the correlation of the ratios and the mVSS total scores. In the end,we analyzed the correlations of expressions of immunohistochemical staining and qPCR with TGF-?,collagen I and collagen III.Results: The thicknesses of hypertrophic scars in ultrasound images showed deeper than normal skin. And the ratio of dermis and epidermis of sound images had positive correlation tendencies with mVSS total scores, positive rate of immunohistochemical and genes expressions. Conclusion: High frequency ultrasound,as a non-invasive method,is widely used in the medical field because of its features of repeatability, convenience and safety. It can be one of methods to use in detecting and quantifying the depth of hypertrophic scars. It has definite clinical value for diagnosing and assessing the progression of hypertrophic scars and therapeutic evaluation of hypertrophic scars treatment.
